Janis Kelly is on a mission to elevate, educate and activate your body, mind & SOUL! She sings and plays "Nu-World Music," a compelling blend of soulful, jazz-infused sounds; funky, "globalicious" beats; and lyrics that speak of love, hope, healing and--above all--PEACE.
A professional vocalist, musician and music teacher who has been performing since 1980 in nightclubs, concert halls, festival stages and recording studios, Janis didn't actually begin writing or recording her own music until 2006, at the age of 44! In her own words, "I just never felt like I had anything original to say up until then--at least not musically!" However, following a life-altering experience that year, she found--inexplicably--that music and lyrics began pouring through her, as if a faucet had been turned on, or a channel had been opened up. For Janis, this was a miraculous discovery, for she knew that she had finally found her true musical calling: to be a "new thought/inspirational" singer-songwriter, recording artist and musical emissary!
Janis has since gone on to record two albums of original material: an EP entitled, "Change The World," in 2007 and a solo LP entitled, "I Am Becoming..." in 2008. She has also recorded, published and posted several performance videos on Youtube and is in the process of recording her next full-length album, "Peace Begins With Me."
Currently touring in support of her first two c.d.'s as well as the 12th annual Season For Nonviolence, Janis delivers performances that are nothing less than exuberant, captivating, powerful, and unique, for they focus as much on audience participation as they do on showcasing her own talent and vocal skills. Whether appearing as a solo artist, as the leader and front singer of her own band, or even as the director of a stage full of performers, she is a master at "sharing the wealth" and making everyone feel like a star! Such displays of graciousness and generosity of spirit have earned Janis a wonderful reputation among her musical colleagues, audiences, employers and music students alike!
As a songwriter, Janis has been most powerfully influenced by none other than Carole King, whose music served as a reminder to her that you can be a while girl AND have soul! Opening up for Carole King in Seattle, circa 1992, is still one of the highlights of Janis' career! Others include opening for the Neville Brothers, Tower Of Power and Rufus & Chaka Khan, as well as appearing on recordings with members of Earth, Wind & Fire, The Emotions, Heart and even Nancy Reagan's "Just Say No!" campaign! She also counts Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Flora Purim and Chaka Khan among her greatest vocal influences, and looks to contemporary artists such as india.arie, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and Zapp Mama for ongoing inspiration. She is forever indebted to her late mother, Joyce Sundeen Kelly Riebe, for serving as her musical mentor, teacher and guiding light, and for leaving her a legacy of musical excellence to share with the world.
Janis' ultimate vision is to travel the world with her "family circle:" a talented tribe of performers and supporting personnel who help her spread the message of planetary transformation and human consciousness--one good song at a time! There's room on the bus for you; won't you join her on this journey?
